Package selection page of the 444 Kör membership platform

Business-critical web application development in the media market: 444 Kör (“444 Circle”) is the membership and subscription platform of one of Hungary’s largest independent outlets, covering the entire reader support journey from package selection through card payments to real-time entitlement management.

The business challenge

For Magyar Jeti Zrt., the publisher of 444, reader support is not supplementary income but the financial foundation of independent operation. That called for a system that takes a casual reader to paid membership with as little friction as possible, and keeps existing subscribers on board.

With a subscription platform, the stakes are especially high: every stuck payment, failed renewal or broken entitlement is direct revenue loss. Development therefore had to put as much weight on the reliability of payment flows as on the user experience.

The solution: a tiered membership system

The platform is built on three membership tiers, from article access through community membership to the inner circle. During the web application development we covered the full subscriber lifecycle:

  • Package selection and payment: a transparent package page, card payments, automatic renewal
  • Account management: package changes, card replacement and cancellation in self-service mode, with no support tickets
  • Real-time entitlements: subscriber access applies instantly across 444.hu articles and community features
  • Renewal flows: automatic charging, with retries and notifications on failed payments
  • Help and FAQ that answers the most common subscriber questions without customer support capacity

Technology background

The membership platform integrates with the publisher’s content management and delivery systems at API level, so entitlement sync is real-time. Payment flows are built on a card payment provider, with recurring charges and card data handled according to banking security standards. The system is sized for heavy traffic, because subscriptions arrive in waves during campaigns and news peaks.

The results

  • Reader support became predictable, recurring revenue for the publisher
  • Self-service account management significantly reduces the load on customer support
  • Real-time entitlements give paying members instant access to content
  • Reliable renewal flows minimise revenue loss from churn

444 Kör shows how to build a business-critical subscription web application next to a high-traffic media product. If you are considering custom software development built on a subscription model, this project is the best reference for it.
